Discussion Text – Kalau saya pribadi lebih mengenalnya dengan Argumentative Essay, yaitu salah satu jenis teks (genre) yang memberikan dua pendapat mengenai suatu hal. Pendapat tersebut tentu ada yang selaras dan juga ada yang bertentangan.
Saat kita berdiskusi tentang suatu hal, tentunya dalam diskusi kita tersebut terdapat berbagai argumen / pendapat yang beragam. Begitu juga dengan discussion text, teks ini memiliki dua pendapat yang berbeda; satu, pendapat yang setuju dan, dua, pendapat yang tidak setuju. Oleh karenanya kita harus memiliki pandangan luas mengenai suatu masalah jika kita ingin membuat discussion text.
Jika masih belum jelas, mari kita pelajari secara lebih detail tentang discussion text baik pengertiannya atau bagaimana cara membuat discussion text.
Definisi Discussion Text
Diskusi adalah sebuah proses mencari titik temu antara dua pemikiran, pandangan atau pendapat yang berbeda. Dan Discussion Text bisa didefinisikan sebagai sebuah teks yang berisi tentang sebuah wacana yang bermasalah. Wacana yang bermasalah ini adalah wacana yang memiliki dua sudut pandang antara setuju / mendukung dan tidak setuju / menentang, antara pendukung isu dan penentang isu. Masalah yang dihadirkan dalam Discussion Text nantinya akan didiskusikan berdasarkan dua sudut pandang (Point of View) tersebut, Pro (pendukung) dan Contra (penentang).
Disebutkan dalam Learner Merriam-Webster Dictionary, bahwa kata “Discussion” memiliki dua makna. Pertama, the act of talking about something with another person or a group of people : a conversation about something (Tindakan berbicara tentang suatu hal kepada orang lain atau sekumpulan orang). Kedua, a speech or piece of writing that gives information, ideas, opinions, etc., about something (Ucapan atau tulisan yang memberikan informasi, ide, opini, dll tentang suatu hal).
Dari kedua pengertian discussion di atas, makna nomor dua lebih cocok dengan makna discussion text. Jika disimpulkan, discussion text bermakna sebuah teks baik terucap atau tertulis yang memberikan informasi, ide, pendapat, tentang suatu hal.
Generic Structure of Discusssion Text
Dalam Discussion text, terdapat empat struktur kebahasaan yang terlihat dari ide pokok setiap paragraf dalam Discussion Text sebagai bahan pembentuk teks-nya, yaitu:
1. Issue
Issue terletak di paragraf pertama yang berisi penempatan masalah atau isu yang akan didiskusikan.
2. Supporting Points
Dalam bagian ini, penulis menghadirkan pendapat yang mendukung isu. Di setiap paragraf Supporting Point terdiri dari dua komponen diantaranya adalah ide pokok paragraf dan elaborasi atau uraian dari ide pokok paragraf tersebut.
3. Contrasting Points
Dalam bagian ini, penulis menghadirkan pendapat yang menentang isu atau permasalahan. Seperti dalam paragraf Supporting Point, Contrasting Points juga menghadirkan dua komponen pembentuk yaitu ide pokok paragraf dan elaborasi atau uraian ari ide pokok paragraf tersebut.
4. Conclunlusion or Recomendation
Dalam bagian ini penulis menghadirkan kesimpulan atau bisa juga rekomendasikan dari isu atau permasalahan yang telah didiskusikan di atas.

Languge Features of Discussion Text
Di dalam membuat Discussion Text, penulis harus memperhatikan penggunaan bahasa yang biasa diterapkan, seperti:
# Menggunakan simpel present tense
# Menggunakan modalites, seperti must, should, would, may, etc.
# Menggunakan contrastive conjunction (kata penghubung berlawanan) seperti, however, on the other hand, but, in other side, etc.

The Ban on Smoking in Public Places
Smoking ban in public places has been a hot issue these last months not only in Malta but also in various countries who are discussing the effects of the ban would have. There have been several debates on smoking ban. Even though the harmful effects of smoking, both active and passive, are well known and undeniable smoking is far from being in decline; it is spreading among young people in particular quickly.
Most controversial debate is going on public smoking ban. The reason is simple, smoking ban affects directly all people rapidly and we can see its effects in a short-term period. There have been a lot of arguments brought up both in favour and against a public smoking ban. Some of the arguments in favour are the following. Smoking ban is one of the controversial ways for reducing smoking and recognizing non-smokers’ right to health protection. The health risks of smoking are clear. Passive smoking does carry risks. Many leading medical and scientific organizations recognize second hand smoke as a cause of a range of life-threatening conditions. The health situation could be drastically improved if one of the risk factors – tobacco – was eliminated. People have a right to protect themselves from smoke inhalation. People shouldn’t have to inhale the ill-effects of other people’s smoking. The creation of smoke-free public places also improves air quality.
Those opposing a smoking ban say that freedom of choice would be affected by such legislation. Some people against a ban say that smoking bans damage business. A smoking ban could lead to a significant fall in earnings from bars, restaurants and casinos. Another argument is that the smoker has a basic human right to smoke in public places, and the ban is a limitation for smokers’ rights. Businesses, smokers, publicans, tobacco industries, stars, and some of the non-smokers oppose public smoking ban. Smokers light a cigarette because they need to smoke, not because they want it, because nicotine is physically addictive. Therefore, some smokers think that the public smoking ban is oppressiveness. They see the ban as a treatment to smokers as second-class citizens. Smokers agree that the smoking ban benefits the world, but cannot support the ban, because effects of nicotine obstruct them.
Public smoking ban needs to be measured and understood better. Smokers should not be made to look like outcasts, but smokers should respect non-smokers when sharing places. I agree that completely smoke-free places are the ideal, and some businesses have taken the decision to go completely smoke-free. However, everyone agrees that, it is a matter of rights – the right of smokers to smoke versus non-smokers to protect from passive smoking and to breathe clean air.

Pro and Contra of Abortion
Abortion is an act of terminating a baby in a human pregnancy. Abortion become viral thing among society, some say that abortion is fine but others say it is illegal. In Indonesia, abortion is considered as an evil thing. It is like killing other human and must be punished heavily. However, since number of population increase uncontrollable, some people begin to consider that abortion may be a fine solution to solve population explosion.
Abortion is one method of birth control. Let’s look at the fact about the population problem in a country. When a country faces the problems of population explosion, the government should find methods to solve it. But since no method of contraception is one hundred percent effective and successful, abortion becomes the only way out when prevention fails.
On the other hand, abortion may cause many negative effects for women’s health. Women risk their health and lives in bearing the weight of the operation and its consequences. The most common complications are inflammation, interruption of menstrual patterns, infertility, endometriosis, myoma of the uterus, and many other kinds of ovary illnesses.
So far, abortions have become a dilemma for countries with a large number of citizens. On one hand, it can control the birth rate but on the other hand, it brings terrible consequences, especially for women’s health.

Aborsi adalah tindakan menghilangkan seorang bayi/janin dalam kandungan manusia. Aborsi menjadi hal yang viral di tengah-tengah masyarakat, beberapa orang mengatakan bahwa aborsi itu baik tetapi yang lain mengatakan bahwa aborsi itu illegal. Di Indonesia, aborsi dianggap sebagai tindakan yang buruk. Aborsi sama seperti membunuh orang dan harus dihukum dengan berat. Akan tetapi, sejak jumlah populasi bertambah tidak terkontrol, beberapa orang mulai menganggap bawah aborsi mungkin bisa menjadi solusi yang baik untuk memecahkan masalah ledakan populasi.
Aborsi adalah salah satu metode pengendalian kelahiran. Mari kita lihat fakta tentang masalah penduduk di suatu negara. Ketika sebuah negara menghadapi masalah ledakan penduduk, pemerintah harus menemukan metode untuk menyelesaikannya. Tapi karena tidak ada metode kontrasepsi adalah seratus persen efektif dan sukses, aborsi menjadi satu-satunya jalan keluar ketika pencegahan gagal.
Di sisi lain, aborsi dapat menyebabkan banyak efek negatif bagi kesehatan wanita. Perempuan mempertaruhkan kesehatan dan kehidupan dalam menjalani operasi dan konsekuensinya. Komplikasi yang paling umum adalah peradangan, gangguan pola menstruasi, infertilitas, endometriosis, mioma uterus, dan berbagai jenis penyakit ovarium lainnya.
